Scorpions in Salt Lake City

Scorpions are predatory arachnids in the order Scorpiones. All arachnids, like spiders, have eight legs. Regardless of the similarities between scorpions and spiders, there are significant differences. Spiders bite their prey and inject venom through their fangs. Rather than using teeth to inject venom into their prey, scorpions use their stinger located at the end of their tail. Scorpions also have a pair of pinchers, called pedipalps. Scorpion species differ in more ways than merely size and color, especially the spider-looking family of whip scorpions. Although scorpions have a poisonous tail, most of the species are not deadly to humans.

In most instances, a healthy adult who is attacked by a scorpion will not require medical assistance. The easiest way to identify a scorpion infestation is through the use of a black light. A Scorpion exposed to ultraviolet rays will glow a vibrant blue-green due to the presence of fluorescent chemicals in the cuticle.
