Crickets are small to medium-sized insects with mostly cylindrical, somewhat vertically flattened bodies. More than 900 species of crickets have been identified around the world. Most male crickets make a loud chirping sound by stridulation (scraping two specially textured limbs together). Several types of cricket songs are in the repertoire of cricket species.
