Scorpions in Charlotte

Scorpions are predatory arachnids in the order Scorpiones. Like all arachnids, they have eight legs. Unlike spiders, they have that distinguishable tail, and a pair of crab-like pinchers called pedipalps. You might think that all scorpions are mostly the same, only differing in color and size, but that is far from reality. Some families of scorpions are unique, including the unpleasant-looking family of whip scorpions. All scorpions have a venomous sting, but the majority of the species do not represent much threat to humans.

Healthy adults who are stung may not require medical treatment. When scorpions are exposed to specific wavelengths of ultraviolet light, such as that produced by a black light, they glow a vibrant blue-green due to the presence of fluorescent chemicals in their cuticle.
