The two most prominent termites in the South Eastern region of the United States are the Eastern Subterranean Termites and the Formosan Subterranean Termites.
Here shown are the Eastern Subterranean Termites, you can tell by the darker bodies, they also only grow to around half an inch.
These termites are most often found swarming in the spring and occasionally in other seasons. Keep a look out in the morning, for that's when you will likely find them, especially after rain. As is common knowledge, termites are found within wood and different kind of trees. These termites in particular infest Douglas firs as well as other common trees. When present, they will hollow out the tree and leave the outer layer with little support, which is what makes them so dangerous in a home. They will cause decay to the structure of any home right under your nose. These termites cause millions worth of damages to homes throughout every year. Especially in the more moist parts of South and North Carolina where at least 1 in 5 homes homes are attacked, the worst part is, you might not even notice they're there.
Here shown are the Formosan Subterranean Termites, you can tell by their clearer bodies, they also grow to about an inch.
Termites are known most for causing large amounts of damage silently, which is what makes them so dangerous. They can chew through various parts of your home undetected for years. This damage is hardly ever covered by insurance. So here are a few tips to keep in mind when checking if your home has termites:
1. The first obvious one is if you find wood damage, this is normally a sure sign of termites, but may be difficult to spot since they normally feed on the inner workings of the wood.
2. If mud tubes are present, that is an easy identifier that there are termites around and also that they have probably been in your home a while since they have had time to make a nest.
3. The last one, is if you find random mysterious small piles of what looks like sand, you most likely have termites, as these are their fecal pellets.
